Port of Brake shone in a rough environment in 2014

EUR 20 million investments in 2015: J. Müller group of companies concentrates on its core markets with growth and efficiency

The J. Müller group of companies, port terminal operators in Brake and in the Bremen timber and factory port, is looking back on a dynamic year2014. In maritime terms: the sea has become rougher and less foreseeable.

Nevertheless the site in the portof Brakehas handled about 6.3 million tonnes in sea traffic, about 11 per cent more than last year, thanks to a strong finish. This is the highest sea traffic volume in the history of the port. However, the port comes to its limits of growth, due to the lack of channel adjustments in theWeser river.

In the agricultural sector the handling of grain and fodder in sea traffic was 24 per cent higher in 2014 than in the previous year. The transshipment volume of 3.43 million tonnes showed at the same time quite clearly the capacity limit of the available quay for the agricultural goods. From this perspective, the agricultural goods sector of the J. Müller group welcomes the establishment of a second mega-ship berth by the Niedersachsen Ports infrastructure company. The implementation of this major project will begin before the end of this year.

In terms of exports volume the timber industry remained at last year’s level. The focus was on exports to North Africa with a focus on Algeria. A new focus was the import of round wood and wood chips. The throughput in the field of bulk cargo increased slightly despite a highly competitive environment and difficult trading conditions in 2014.

Under the slogan „growth and efficiency in the home markets“, the group will continue to focus on their strengths, announced Jan Müller, CEO J. Müller AG. The handling and logistics business will be expanded with agricultural goods, fish meal, fertilizers, sulfur, coffee, the bulk cargo – such as pulp, steel, wood, and the project and wind power shipments.

According to Jan Müller growth means more handling, greater depth of service and meeting increasingly higher quality requirements. Efficiency means to align the processes and the business organisation with the market needs and a cost-effective set up. For 2015, an investment program of over EUR 20 million was designated therefore.

Founded in 1821, J. Müller AG operates the sites Brake and Bremen, two powerful sea port terminals at the Unterweser. In addition, the family-run company offers a comprehensive service portfolio, innovative port and logistics solutions for grain, fodder, biomass, recyclables, steel products, wind turbines, cocoa and coffee, forestry products, sulfur and marine proteins, as well as complete industrial plants. The company employs 476 people and generated gross sales of EUR 114 million in 2014.
