Port of Hamburg preserves its peak container position in Austria

Huge audience at big event of Hamburg’s port industry in Vienna; emphasis on multipurpose strategy remains untouched

Austria remains one of the most significant markets in central European hinterland for the port of Hamburg, emphasised Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), in his speech on the occasion of the traditional port evening on May 6 in Vienna. The major event at the Heurigen-restaurant “Weingut Wolf in Neustift am Walde“ was attended by about 250 guests from Austrian shipping agencies, forwarding companies, logistics providers, rail operators, operators and container trucking companies as well as inland ports.

Last year the port of Hamburg saw about 3.1 million tonnes of cargo coming from or going to destinations in Austria. At 275,000 TEU and a market share of about 50 per cent the North German seaport has preserved its peak position in the segment of containerised sea freight. 80 weekly trains are currently operated for hinterland transport of the seaport. Notwithstanding, they are still acting as multi-purpose-port with special service concepts for bulk cargo, conventional shipments and project logistics activities, underlined Alexander Till, Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM)’s representative in Austria.
