Port of Hamburg remains on top of Austria’s container segment

Even without subsidies and large additional positioning the northern German seaport remains a top figure or container traffic to / from Austria

For the Port of Hamburg, Austria remains one of the major markets in Central European hinterland, as emphasised Axel Mattern, CEO Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. (HMM), in his speech at the traditional port event on 11 June in Vienna. About 250 guests from Austrian shipping agencies, forwarders, logistics providers, rail operators, container trucking companies and inland ports participated in the event at the typical Austrian tavern Weingut Wolf in Neustift am Walde in Vienna.

Last year about 3 million tonnes of goods with destination or departure in Austria have passed the port of Hamburg. Handling 270,000 TEU or a market share of about 50 per cent the North German seaport was able to maintain its peak position in the segment of containerised sea freight. The transport offer on the railway between the seaport and the hinterland comprises currently more than 80 weekly trains.

What is pleasing for host Alexander Till, Head of the Hafen Hamburg Marketing representative office in Vienna, is the equal pairing of the container transports from and to Austria, he says in a short speech. Hamburg achieved this even withoout public subsidies and without costly additional positioning of empty containers.

Notwithstanding, the port sees itself as a universal port offering special service concepts, amon others for bulk cargo, conventional cargo and project logistic operations, says Axel Mattern, CEO Hafen Hamburg Marketing (HHM), to the Austrian transport magazine Österreichische Verkehrszeitung.
