Port of Koper prolongs growth in transit to Austria

30-years-jubilee the port of Koper’s office in Vienna; volumes in container traffic beat the mark of 100,000 TEU in 2013

Austria remains the major single market in the European hinterland of Koper. “In 2013 about 5.5 million tonnes of sea freight (import/export) coming from or going to Austria have passed the Slovenian seaport. This means a 6 per cent increase on last year“, says Gaspar Gaspar Misic, the new President of the Management Board Luka Koper d.d., on December 3, as host of a port evening with about 250 guests in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. “We have been the key port for Austrian sea cargo for several years now. This should remain so in future as well,“ he adds proudly.

Container transport from/to Austria beats the mark of 100,000 TEU in 2013 for the first time. Transhipment volume is expected to amount to 110,000 TEU. „In 2008 we registered 32,000 TEU in this segment, meaning we have more than tripled the volume within five years“, Alojz Fabjan, head of the port of Koper’s representative office in Austria, illuminates the massive increase of cargo traffic. From his point of view the strong position of the Slovenian seaport in the federal states of Carinthia and Styria shall be expanded to Vienna and Upper Austria as soon as possible.

Meanwhile the seaport’s office in Vienna celebrates its 30th anniversary. Opened in 1983 the main task of the office has been the promotion and maintenance of business relations with local shipping agencies, forwarding companies, rail operators, trading houses and industrial enterprises. This approach has still priority. Therefore deepening customer relations remains the key task for Alojz Fabjan also in the coming years.
