Port of Rostock: Conversion of intermodal terminal to be completed

Despite losses in ferry traffic and stagnating ro-ro volumes the seaport of Rostock registered a slight uptrend in cargo throughput in 2013

The conversion of the terminal for intermodal transport in the seaport of Rostock, which was started in May 2012, is about to be completed. The new transhipment terminal for goods carried by rail, road and waterway will be expanded to a total area of about 30,000 m² by February 2014. The entire intermodal terminal will then cover about 70,000 m². Dismantling of two ramps and two tracks, as well as the extension and relocation of tracks was completed in June 2012.

After completion of the construction works three additional tracks will be available for throughput. The five tracks will be operated with two new gantry cranes suitable for curves, each weighing 500 tonnes, 35 metres high and a range of 76.5 metres. The investment for this project totals EUR 17 million.

The terminal for intermodal transport is called by 35 weekly intermodal trains from and to Verona (12), Hamburg (6), Karlsruhe (6), Brno (4), Novara (3), Domodossola (2) and Wels (2). The number of trailer units handled last year rose from 64,255 in 2012 to 64,851.

Total cargo throughput in the seaport of Rostock amounted to 21.4 million tonnes in 2013, which means one per cent increase on 2012. While losses could be seen with liquid, general and ferry cargo volumes, and stagnating ro-ro cargo volumes, throughput volume of bulk cargo was outstanding. “Grains and fertilisers were the main drivers of this slight growth“, says Ulrich Bauermeister, managing director of the port development company.

In 2013 about 11.02 million tonnes of ferry cargo (-1 per cent) and 1.25 million tonnes of ro-ro cargo (±0 per cent) passed the quays of Rostock. The number of trucks carried on the ferry and ro-ro lines from and to Northern Europe declined from 310,833 in 2012 to 307,227 in the past year. The number of trailers remained stable with 109,638 units. 7,224 rail cars were transported to and from Trelleborg, slightly beneath last year’s level.
