“Ports are the heart and motor of Bremen’s industry”

Approximately one in five jobs in the state of Bremen depends on the Bremen ports: this is the result of a study carried out by the Institute for Shipping and Logistics (ISL) on behalf of the bremenports company, which was submitted to the committee on port affairs in the state of Bremen on 30 August 2017.

Senator Martin Günthner rated the report as a proof of the outstanding importance of the port facilities in Bremen and Bremerhaven: “The ports are the heart and the motor of Bremen’s industry. In spite of slight changes in detail, this segment of the Bremen economy has even grown in recent years. The importance for the Bremen labor market can not be overestimated. This makes it obligatory for the Senate to continue to make all necessary efforts to position our ports competitively.”

Facts and figures:

  • 77.250 employees in Bremen were identified as port-dependent.
  • 59,350 persons in Bremen and Bremerhaven were determined as employed directly dependent on the port.
  • 33,050 persons are allocated to the core area of the “seaport transport industry”.
  • 26,300 persons work in the “port-related Industry” (importing and exporting industrial enterprises as well as wholesale and retail trade).
  • 17,900 employees are attributable to the group of “indirectly dependent employees”.

Between 2010 and 2015, the number of port-dependent jobs has therefore increased by two percent. There was growth across all segments of the port industry.

The importance of the ports for Bremen is demonstrated not least by the fact that almost one in five jobs in Bremen depend on the ports (18.4%). For Hamburg and Lower Saxony, the figures are much lower. Thus every ninth workplace in the metropolis at the Elbe river can be associated with the ports. In the Lower Saxony port regions, it is every eighteenth job.
