Poundland plans 300,000 sq ft Wigan DC

Poundland is seeking planning permission for a 300,000 sq ft distribution centre at the South Lancs Industrial Estate in Ashton-in-Makerfield which will serve its network of stores in the North West.

The site on the outskirts of Wigan was chosen by Poundland over two other areas in the North West to secure the investment.

Councillor David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for economy, said: “We beat some high quality competition to land this investment and are delighted that Poundland have chosen Wigan.”

The Poundland site will cover more than 31,495 sq m on the former land of Georgia Pacific at Lockett Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield. It has the potential to create up to 800 jobs in the coming years.

“We are very pro-business at Wigan Council and have worked closely with the developer db symmetry and Poundland to ensure that the plans come to fruition,” said Molyneux.

Poundland, which is based in the West Midlands, opened its first store in 1990 and now has more than 500 stores across the UK and Ireland.

In February, it unveiled a £55m takeover bid 99p Stores which has more than 250 stores in the UK. This is currently the subject of an inquiry by the Competition and Markets Authority which is due to publish its final report in the middle of October 2015.
