Prangl to manage hydrochloric acid plant project in Hungary

A new plant for the production of hydrochloric acid was erected in Kazincbarcika, Hungary. The main task was the installation of a 32-metre high reactor with a weight of 160-tonnes. Exactly the right job for Prangl’s international team.

The reactor (with a diameter of 4.8 m) was made in South-West Hungary and brought to Kazincbarcika by lorry. In the chemical plant there, the section was received by a 650-tonne crawler crane and a 250-tonne telescopic crane. In a tandem lift, the reactor was turned in order for a large crane to then lift it into its final position. To do this safely, the crawler crane was equipped with a 72-metre boom and a 460-tonne counterweight. In total, the colossus weighed in at 721.6 tonnes.

On the second day of the project, a 20-tonne steel structure that encloses the reactor was lifted in. This was a precision job because the framework construction had to be “threaded” around the reactor.

In addition to the special circumstances already described, the tight space conditions and the enormous time pressure in particular stretched all those involved until the very last minute. The erection of the large crane took just five days. Considering that the entire system was made up of 40 lorry loads, a very ambitious goal indeed. The hoisting processes alone took two days.
