Private railway operators provide traction for one third of block trains in Austria

Significant uptrend in the rail sector: In 2014 Austria had the highest transport performance in rail cargo transport

Presented on August 12, the 2014 market report by Schienen-Control shows 22.5 billion net tonne kilometres in rail cargo transport. “This means railway provided the highest transport performance in its history”, said Maria-Theresia Röhsler, Managing Director of Schienen-Control to the press.

Private rail cargo enterprises had been able to increase their performance once again, raising their market share regarding volume (in tonnes) from 24.9 per cent last year to 26.2 per cent. The market share of the transport performance (net tonne kilometres) rose – from 19.3 per cent to 21.4 per cent – by 2.1 percentage points. With private rail operators accounting for more than 40 per cent, it was a fierce competitive situation on the Brenner route (+ 1.8 per cent) and on the Danube corridor between Vienna and Passau (+3.6 per cent).

As to block trains the competitive railway operators are serving one third of the market in Austria. Unlike in the operation of single wagonload traffic, this is carried out by about 99 per cent by the market leader Rail Cargo Austria. The biggest competitive railway is still Lokomotion accounting for 5 per cent (2013: 4%), followed by CargoServ with roughly 3.5 per cent, which took over the cargo transport activities of Logserv in 2014. These are followed by LTE Logistik- und Transport (LTE), TX Logistik Austria (TXL) and the Viennese Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC).

Five new railway companies have started operation in the Austrian railway network in 2014. Hence there is a total of 52 railway companies operating in Austria, according to the annual report of the railway regulation authority Schienen-Control. In addition to 43 Austrian railway companies there are nine more companies registered from the European Union.
