Rail Cargo Austria ensures 5-years contract with voestalpine

RCA’s block trains supply voestalpine sites in Linz and Leoben-Donawitz with 6.35 million tons of raw material per year

voestalpine AG and Rail Cargo Austria are to prolong their partnership by another 5 years. Both companies agreed upon continuing their cooperation in raw material supply of the two voestalpine sites Linz and Leoben-Donawitz on 3 April and thus consolidated their commitment to a sustainable shift of cargo transport from the road to railway.

In the frame of the 5-years contract concluded by Christian Kern, CEO ÖBB, and Wolfgang Eder, CEO voestalpine, 6.350 million tons of raw material will be transported on the railway per year. The transportations come from Ukraine, Poland and the seaport of Koper to their destinations in Linz and Leoben-Donawitz. This ensures an annual transport volume of about 750,000 tons for the Hungarian cargo subsidiary Rail Cargo Hungaria on the medium term. Daily volume amounts to 18 block trains.

The cooperation of voestalpine AG and Rail Cargo Austria is aimed at planning and implementing innovative transport logistic concepts, while securing a high share of rail transport in the procurement logistics. In addition to raw material transport Rail Cargo Austria transports annually about 500,000 tons of steel products on behalf of voestalpine to different customers.

The ÖBB group in turn implements many infrastructure projects using voestalpine rail and track switching systems. The annual order volume of the railway enterprise amounts to 25,000 to 40,000 tons of rails, completed by 600 track switches and track switching systems.
