Rail Cargo Austria reinforces innovative wagons

Austrian cargo railway RCA presents new train

At the beginning of this week Rail Cargo Austria AG invited to the naming ceremony of the new Taurus locomotive 1116 003-3 in RCA branding and presented five innovative cargo wagons. Doris Bures, the Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology, was the godmother of the 7,000 kW-strong multisystem-locomotive. The “cart horse” has a maximum performance capacity of 9,000 HP and is the heart of the RCA fleet, but also the fastest locomotive of the ÖBB – with 230 km/h.

After one of the ÖBB’s 38 feminine locomotive drivers has brought the Taurus, it was connected to five new cargo wagons, which completed the “RCA 1“-train. The new wagons are part of an investment program that was launched in 2005/06. The plan is to acquire around 5,000 wagons, which shall be delivered step-by-step until 2013, as Ferdinand Schmidt, Member of the RCA Management Board, disclosed to the Österreichische Verkehrszeitung (Austrian Transport Magazine). The cargo wagons are suitable for the transportation of waste, waste paper, container consignments, round timber or pallet goods and paper rolls.

”In Austria about 30 per cent of the cargo traffic is handled on the rail, whereas the average rate in the EU is 15 per cent“, Federal Minister Bures emphasised. Around three quarter of all RCA transportations are border crossing. The Taurus locomotive in the RCA branding is also compatible with the power systems in Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and France.
