Rail Cargo Group optimises wagon fleet for automotive transport

EUR 2.2 million-investment: Rail Cargo Group expands fleet of special wagons for transportations on behalf of the automotive industry

The Rail Cargo Group is about to implement a package of measures to modernise and expand the wagon fleet to serve the automotive industry. With EUR 2.2 million investments the wagons are upgraded to special wagons, which help providing better services to customers. “The newly adapted wagons allow full use of the cargo hold and are hence an environmentally friendly alternative for trucks“, reads a press release.

The beneficiaries of the initiative include a well-known company from the automotive industry, for whom the Rail Cargo Group has handled approximately 270 round trips by rail last year. Part of the equipment used has now been modernised and adapted for the customer: The 50 cars will be added to the 50 units refitted in 2006, which means the cargo train is now composed of a total of 100 wagons of the Hbis-tt type (2-axle wagon with sliding wall and loading height of at least 3.05 meters). The cars were designed and adapted for transports of pressed part.

The conversion of the wagons was made by the subsidiary Rail Cargo Wagon. The most important factor in this context is the loading volume, as the automotive industry requires a minimum loading height of 3.05 meters. The new wagons are also equipped with a long stroke buffer, ideally protecting the goods.

Rail Cargo Group was the world’s first railway company to be certified according to VDA 6.2.4, the association of the German automotive industry. Through compliance with the conditions the cargo railway is meeting the requirements of the automotive industry to secure the transport processes of automotive products through the introduction of uniform quality standards and optimise and document them.
