Rail Cargo Group starts new block train service to Turkey

Strategic partnership of Rail Cargo Group and BALO launching regular block train by own traction from the Ruhr area to Tekirdag/Cerkezköy

The Rail Cargo Group and BALO, a Turkish forwarding company (Büyük Anadolu Lojistik Organizasyonlar), are to enhance their cooperation started in September 2013. In a press release both strategic partners announce the establishment of a highly frequent far-disctance intermodal link from the Ruhr area to Turkey. Providing its own traction the Rail Cargo Group ensures a better connection of Turkey to Europe.

Establishing this new service the Rail Cargo Group is taking another step to strengthen its presence in the strongly growing Turkish market. The first intermodal block train by own traction has been launched recently, linking the Ruhr area and Bosporus. Deploying an ÖBB locomotive, authorised for use in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, the journey started at the Terminal in Duisburg, covering a distance of more than 2,000 kilometres to the Turkish border.

“Through this strategic partnership we are taking an important step towards a market that shows great development potential for the Rail Cargo Group. We want to offer an attractive product with a high frequency of departures, goods quality and competitive prices. This shall also connect the Asian part of Turkey on the railway“, says Erik Regter, CEO Rail Cargo Group.

The container shuttle is operated every other day on each course and takes five days at maximum to cover the entire distance, including interim manipulations. According to Erik Regter shorter runtimes in own traction allow to reduce the binding of the wagons and to carry a higher volume with the same number of wagons.
