Rerouting of rail cargo transport with Karawankenbahn

Karawankenbahn between Villach and Jesenice (SLO) is closed from 7 July to 14 August; cargo traffic to be rerouted partially

ÖBB is tackling another major project to modernise the infrastructure. On 7 July renovation of the overhead cable between Gödersdorf and Rosenbach is to start. On two about 5 kilometres segments about 240 pylons will be replaced and around 10 kilometres of wire will be brought up until 14 August.

Up to 40 employees per day will carry out the works with rail-based special vehicles. During the construction works the tracks must be closed. Replacement routes for passenger and cargo traffic will be organised.

To take advantage of the closed route, additional infrastructure improvements will be implemented, such as renovation of passages. Moreover comprehensive forestry works will be carried out, preventively keeping the rail route free. All material will be transported on the rail.

Cargo traffic on the international main line will partially be rerouted via Rosental or Spielfeld/Straß. “We ask all truck drivers to exercise special caution at not technically secured railway crossings in Rosental. Trains must be expected at any time of the day/night“, ÖBB informs.
