Rhenus Logistics to expand capacity at Rotterdam port

On 7 July 2017, Rhenus Logistics officially putted its new quay at the Deep Sea Terminal at Maasvlakte into operation. This involves 275 metres along the east side as an addition to the 500-metre quay the company is already operating along the south side of the terminal.

By adding the new quay, Rhenus is increasing the capacity and thus the flexibility of the terminal at Antarcticaweg considerably. The stevedore is focusing on break bulk cargo (such as packages of steel and aluminium), project cargo and offshore-related projects. Vessels in the latter segment in particular are often moored at the quay for an extended period, thus limiting the space for other vessels.

‘The new East Quay enables us to service the Seaway Heavy Lifting offshore vessels as well as the Nirint Shipping scheduled service to Cuba and the Caribbean Islands at the same time,’ says Peter van der Steen, managing director at Rhenus. ‘For that reason we also purchased a fourth mobile harbour crane.’

Rhenus already invested previously in construction of two sheds with a combined surface area of 54,000 square metres. The total surface area of the former ro/ro terminal is 210,000 square metres, enough to handle transhipment exceeding a million tonnes per year.

In addition to the Maasvlakte terminal, Rhenus is also operating a terminal at the Waalhaven. This terminal has a quay with a length of approx 900 metres and has a surface area of 65,000 square metres, of which a third is covered.
