S. Ekinci of GW’s parcel service awarded “Jungspediteur 2012“

Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik awards prize to Serhat Ekinci for tool to optimise routes and reduce CO2-emissions

Serhat Ekinci, 25 from Vienna, working for Gebrüder Weiss’ parcel service in Leopoldsdorf has won the “Jungspediteur des Jahres 2012“-prize (young forwarder of the year). The Austrian forwarding and logistics association “Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik“ awarded this prize for a tour-critics solution, which might considerably reduce CO2-emissions in parcel delivery through daily optimisation of the transport routes. Second and third ranked were young forwarders: Karina Kuttner (21) from Linz chose the subject of communication problems between customers, dispatchers and drivers. 18-years-old Katharina Mitteregger from Salzburg worked on the project of supplying ”green” fork lifts with power from photovoltaic systems.

Harald Bollmann, president of the Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik, congratulated the winners and praised the quality of the solutions on the occasion of the prize-awarding ceremony at the Kaiserpavillon Schönbrunn in Vienna: “All projects submitted comprise interesting approaches, are highly professional and show how much creative potential our young logisticians have.“

The Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik organises the “Jungspediteurs des Jahres“-contest every year to promote Austria’s young logisticians. This year female and male employees from the forwarding business throughout Austria, born in 1987 or younger, were invited to submit ecologically and/or economically sustainable solutions for customers and/or the industry“.

In his project Serhat Ekinci adresses the problems of routes being organised by each parcel deliverer on their own. Therefore he suggests to optimise the routes daily and objective: „As delivery tours are similar each day, comparison with an optimised route afterwards leads to a learning effect with the driver, who can then consider this with the next tours on the following day, when manually organising the tour.“ A software tool helps with setting up the route critics and shows addresses that were approached, driven kilometres as well as the CO2-emission per kilometre of each vehicle. Based on this, the route can be optimised and the possible CO2 reduction can be calculated.
