Schmidt group enters MST Spedition

Schmidt group acquires a 50 per cent stake in MST Mineral – Spedition – und Transport GmbH to consolidate its position in bulk cargo logistics

The Schmidt group based in Heilbronn (Germany) announces its acquisition of a 50 % stake in MST Mineral – Spedition – und Transport GmbH, Kerpen. MST ships mainly quartz sand, soda and other mineral substances for the glass industry and iron foundries. As these products are heavier than plastics, the company uses rather small tankers with a capacity of 38 – 42 m³.

This step taken at the start of this year confirms the Schmidt group’s striving for diversification of its service portfolio for the transportation segment. In addition to plastics raw materials, a large number of other bulk goods is transported, stored and distributed. These include mineral substances, but also technical starch, feedstuff (GMP certification) and foodstuff – predominantly sugar, transported exclusively in containers equipped with customised discharge gear.

Using Schmidt’s infrastructure available in Germany and throughout Europe, MST’s activities are to be gradually expanded, thus making use of the synergies between both enterprises. Investments in new vehicle units are planned and already implemented in part.

Founded in 1948 the Schmidt group is acting as a specialist in the bulk logistics segment and has more than 1,400 employees at 32 locations worldwide. Their storage capacity includes 1,162 silos with 438,231 m³ capacity, as well as 103,520 m² warehouse facilities. The transport segment involves 800 vehicles and 5,000 containers.
