Seaports of Niedersachsen: 2013 balance sheet of highs and lows

Cargo throughput down in the seaports of Niedersachsen – but positive development of important business units

The nine Lower Saxon seaports in Brake, Cuxhaven, Emden, Leer, Nordenham, Oldenburg, Papenburg, Stade and Wilhelmshaven had to face losses in cargo throughput in 2013. At about 46 million tonnes throughput volume was about 7 per cent below the figure of 2012, as the marketing company of the Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH announced at the annual press conference of the seaports. The main reason therefore was the declining throughput volume of bulk cargo, they state. Individual business segments of the ports, such as handling components of wind power plants, forestry products and automobiles, developed clearly positive.

„Our seaports in Lower Saxony were able to maintain and partly expand their position in the important and intensively value adding core businesses. This includes throughput and storage of massive cargo, dry bulk cargo and project cargo from the wind energy segment, and of course the automotive handling. In addition, container traffic will evolve into another important pillar of the port industry in Lower Saxony in the coming years,“ said Inke Onnen-Lübben, managing director of marketing company of the Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH.

To maintain the competitiveness on the long term with other European seaports, especially in conventional port handling, further expansion projects of infrastructure and hinterland connections would have to be implemented. The Lower Saxon port operators and resident industrial companies had identified sustainable market opportunities and invested around EUR 134 million last year, which was a key statement at the annual press conference.
