Seaports of Niedersachsen: Slightly up in 2014

Wind energy components, forestry products, new cars and agricultural products keep modest growing to the seaports of Niedersachsen

In 2014, the nine seaports of Niedersachsen handled a total of approximately 46.4 million tonnes of maritime cargo (46 million tonnes in 2013) and thus recorded a growth of 1 per cent year-on-year. Positive developments resulted from the key business of the ports, such as the handling and storage of wind energy components, forestry products and automobiles, as well as agricultural products.

The ocean-side bulk cargo throughput in the seaports of Niedersachsen rose 1 per cent to about 39.3 million tonnes in 2014 (38.76 million tonnes in 2013). Handling of general cargo in sea traffic, including conventional cargo such as forestry products, steel and project cargo, as well as containers, the seaports of Niedersachsen handled a total of about 7.05 million tonnes in 2014. Compared to the previous year, this means a decrease of 2 per cent, due to the decline in container traffic.

Throughput of new cars on the waterway in the seaports in Lower Saxony was at a total of 1.7 million vehicles, an increase of about 7 per cent over the previous year (nearly 1.6 million vehicles in 2013).

„We are quite satisfied with the throughput result in seaway transport in our nine seaports of Niedersachsen. In business areas with intense added value such as handling and storage of large amounts of general cargo, agricultural products and project cargo, like in the field of wind energy, but also in automobile handling, we see very good development in several locations. As to container handling in Wilhelmshaven its operator Eurogate also expects to pick up significantly in 2015 with the start of 2M Alliance“, Inke Onnen-Lübben, Managing Director of the Hafenmarketinggesellschaft Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH commented on the throughput results.
