Shipping Awards 2010

Sustainable Shipping Awards 2010 celebrate Environmental Initiatives and Innovation in Shipping internationally recognised judging panel to preside and recognize success amongst the maritime industry’s drivers of environmental excellence.

Following the recent COP 15 meeting in December 2009, no decisions were made regarding shipping, however the debate will have a large impact on future discussions in IMO, US and the EU, and as such COP 15 has changed the setting for future negotiations regarding shipping and the environment.

With a potential cap and trade legislation in US Senate in early 2010 which is expected to cover bunker fuels in a wider carbon tax regime as part the Kerry-Boxer bill and further high level climate conferences in Bonn, Germany and COP16 scheduled for Mexico in November, the process of negotiating a global deal will once again be attempted.

As shipping continues to receive continued attention and increased environmental scrutiny, Sustainable Shipping, the leading information platform dedicated to marine transportation and the environment, today announced that following the great success of the 2009 inaugural awards, the 2010 Sustainable Shipping Awards will look to celebrate the efforts that are continually being made to address and improve the environmental legacy throughout the shipping industry.

Hosted on 24 June 2010 at London’s Cumberland Hotel, located at the top of Park Lane, opposite Hyde Park and Marble Arch, the event promises to be one of the premier social networking events of the summer for shipping companies, regulators, technology companies, environmental companies and related stakeholders.

As the industry continues to look at new measures such as alternative marine fuels and technologies to reduce emissions levels, the awards will recognise industry companies and individuals who have made significant strides to positively tackle environmental issues and work towards a lasting sustainable legacy for shipping.

An exhibition of the short listed nominations along with a seminar and open debate will be held during the afternoon, which will ensure real opportunity for an in-depth showcase of the entries as well as allowing discussion and key networking amongst both guests and nominees prior to the awards dinner ceremony.

The awards dinner will be judged by a panel of key figures involved in shipping and the environment, including:

Dr. Anne-Marie Warris, Environmental Advisor, Lloyd’s Register ; Arthur Bowring, MD, Hong Kong Shipowners Association ; Charlie Browne, Environmental Manager, IKEA UK ; Arild B. Iversen, CEO, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics ; Fred Pearce, Senior Environmental Consultant, New Scientist ; Dr Simon Walmsley, Head of Marine, WWF UK ; Natalie Bruckner-Menchell, Senior Editor, SustainableShipping.com.

The Sustainable Shipping Awards will present a variety of awards ranging Ocean Environmental Protection, to Clean Air, and Environmental Technology with 2009 winners including AP Moller Maersk for shipping operator of the year, Skysails for Environmental Technology of the year and Green ship of the future for the green initiative award for its joint industry project aimed at developing and demonstrating technologies for the reduction of air emissions from ships.
