Shipping company Hamburg Süd defied the crisis in 2009

Drastic cost reductions at shipping group Hamburg Süd in the year 2009

The 2009 crisis of the world economy and shipping industry affected also the German shipping company Hamburg Süd. The load volumes in liner traffic declined 13 per cent on 2008 to 2.3 million TEU. This was accompanied by a slump in turnover of 28 per cent to EUR 3.2 billion, caused by considerably declined freight charges.

In order to prevent a staff reduction (4,791 employees) the enterprise, which is affiliated to the Oetker group, took as drastic measures as the cost reduction by around EUR 300 million. Moreover the number of containers was lowered, as well as container vessels, which sank by 13 per cent to 96 units. The fleet operated by the Hamburg Süd group comprises 148 units in total, 36 of them are their own vessels. Until the year 2012, 12 new vessels with a total capacity of around 80,000 TEU shall be added to the own fleet.
