Stable goods throughput in Mierka Donauhafen Krems in 2012

Mierka Donauhafen Krems registered increases in project business and in transhipment of commodities in 2012

The Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems handled a high level volume in 2012 again. More than 1.1 million tonnes of goods were loaded and unloaded on Lower Austria’s biggest port area at the waterway. “Throughput remained almost stable compared to last year“, Hubert Mierka, managing director Mierka Donauhafen Krems GmbH & Co KG, says to the news service NÖ Wirtschaftspressedienst.

As opposed to 2011, when large volumes of gravel passed the quay walls of the port, the enterprise handled more project cargo in 2012 – particularly components for wind power plants. They registered increases in the sector of commodities, such as transhipment of agricultural products, mineral products and fertilisers, as Mierka informs. 400 vessels called the port of Krems in 2012.

As to transport modes, annual throughput 2012 can be broken down to 500,000 tonnes transported by truck, 380,000 tonnes on vessels and 250,000 tonnes on the railway. Whereas trucking increased eight per cent with 28,000 manipulations, vessel throughput decreased by eleven per cent and railway transport by seven per cent.

Hubert Mierka has great expectations for the cooperative with the HHLA subsidiary Metrans, allowing them to offer more attractive prices to their customers from industry, trade and logistics. “The seaports of Hamburg, Bremen and Rotterdam are now easier to reach for us“, he discloses. Mierka Donauhafen Krems has currently 75 employees.
