Stena Line increases its capacity on the Rotterdam-Harwich route

The route between the Netherlands and Great Britain is currently served twice a day by the Capucine and Severine vessels. After the expiry of the charter contracts in January 2018, Stena Line is using the RoRo vessels MV “Misida” and MV “Misana”, thus increasing the capacity by 20 percent.

The expansion of the capacity reflects also the positive development of Rotterdam (Europoort) as a rail hub in freight traffic between Europe and Great Britain. The exchange of ships coincides with the likely completion of the expansion works in the port. With the aim of further strengthening the position of Europoort as a multifunctional hub, a second terminal is currently being completed.

“I am glad we can take make the next move of our strategic development of the Rotterdam-Harwich route,” said Annika Hult, Trade Director Stena Line North Sea. “Over the last few years, we have seen strong growth rates in freight transport to the UK and we see a high capacity utilisation on this route.”

The volume from rail transport play an important role. “The rail freight traffic between Poznan, Poland and Europoort is currently performing very well. We believe that the combined rail / RoRo transport will be further developed in the future,” says Annika Hult.

Stena Line, the Swedish shipping company established in 1962, has developed into one of the world’s largest ferry companies, with currently 5,000 employees. In 2016, more than 7 million passengers, 1.5 million cars and 2 million freight units were transported between the Netherlands and the UK, the Irish Sea and the Baltic Sea between Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Latvia and Germany. The fleet currently consists of 35 ships, operated on 20 routes.
