Turkish Cargo launches freighter service to Budapest

Turkish Cargo has begun a new scheduled weekly A310 freighter service between Istanbul and Budapest.

With a capacity of around 40 tonnes in each direction, the new freighter service will complement the bellyhold cargo capacity of the airline’s passenger flights between the two cities, which has just increased from a daily service to ten flights per week.
The airline says that the new non-stop wide-body cargo service between Istanbul and Budapest is being treated as a test. Should the business develop as expected, the freighter service frequency will be increased.

According to Budapest Airport’s vice president of Cargo & Logistics, Christa Soltau, the airport is becoming an increasingly important cargo hub for the central eastern European market and beyond, with more and more airlines and logistics companies recognising the value of its position as a hub for central, eastern and south-eastern Europe. In the first four months of this year, the number of freighter flights increased by 7% and cargo tonnage was up 30%.
With the addition of Turkish Cargo, there are now 55 cargo airlines serving the Hungarian airport on a scheduled and ad-hoc basis, including thirteen regular scheduled freighter operators.

To encourage and accommodate expected future growth, Budapest Airport plans to significantly enhance its cargo and logistics facilities and infrastructure. These plans include the construction of the airport’s new 14,000 m² Cargo City development, which is expected to be completed by end-2012.
