UK security restrictions for export air cargo

SBS Worldwide has issued a notice about the UK’s new airfreight regulations that became effective on November 15th.

Failure to comply with these new regulations will result in delays to export air consignments.

Following the recent well publicised air cargo security breaches, it is now mandatory for declarations to be made for every consignment tendered for movement by air to any worldwide destination.

The declaration completed by the shipper (exporter) must confirm that the consignment for export contains none of the following:

  • Cargo, mail or courier that has originated or passed through a point in the Yemen or Somalia
  • Ink and toner cartridges larger than 500g will be prohibited for carriage as air cargo if arriving, departing and transferring through the UK unless from a UK Known Consignor

In addition to this, in accordance with SBS’s policy not to accept any personal effects or household shipments, the company requests a declaration that shipments do not contain such items.

The practice now being adopted by the entire UK air cargo industry is that the required declaration should be completed and returned the forwarder / carrier by 15h00 on the day prior to despatch.

SBS says that, in certain circumstances, it may be possible to secure a blanket declaration for regular shippers, but this will be by exception.
