UKWA chairman’s award for Derrick Potter

Derrick Potter, chairman of Potter Logistics, has taken the chairman’s Award in this year’s UK Warehousing Association Awards. Potter is a former chairman of UKWA and this year the 50th anniversary of Potter Logistics.

It was one of three awards won by Potter Logistics. Scott Wallace was named warehouse manager of the year, and Joe Jackson of Potter shared the award for of the Young Employee of the Year with Samantha Trubshaw of Cornish Orchards.

Carla Dobson of the Samuel Grant Group won the junior manager of the year award, Hörmann UK won the Environment award, and MDA, won the warehouse company of the year award.

Attending this year’s event, trade minister and former director general of the CBI Digby Jones called on the industry to improve education, training and skills.

“Half the kids coming out of school this summer will not be able to read and write to a standard expected of an 11 year old. One in five adults are functionally illiterate.

“We need more and better skilled people… we need kids coming out of school who can read, write, count and operate a computer. They need to be equipped to deal with the greatest movement of goods and services around the world that we have ever seen – globalisation.”
