viadonau publishes latest figures of Danube navigation

viadonau’s 2013 Annual Report for Danube navigation in Austria gives good marks to the development of the Danube waterway

The seventh issue of the Annual Report for Danube navigation in Austria is now available. In its new design it offers a detailed overview on the core tasks of viadonau, as well as central facts and figures about Danube navigation. The annual report can be found on www.viadonau.org

In 2013, the Danube was as powerful and robust transport way, showing an increase of cross-border freight traffic by 4.8 per cent. Likewise, transport performance within and outside Austria increased by 5.6 per cent to 11.1 billion tonne-kilometers. The transit traffic on the Danube increased by 19 per cent. „This positive development shows that we are on the right track and encouraged us in our effort to continue to manage the waterway integratively and comprehensively,“ said DI Hans-Peter Hasenbichler, CEO viadonau.

With a total volume of 2.3 million tonnes in 2013, the agricultural and forestry products reached the highest ever evaluated value. These record volumes show that viadonau is on the right way with its current work initiative for renewable resources, where together with the actors from the logistics sector new shipments by barge are initiated.

Heavy precipitations in June 2013 led to a flood on the Austrian Danube section, which necessitated a stop of navigation for the unusually long duration of two weeks. Since the flood had caused serious damage to the lock system in Altenwörth, the stop had to be extended by another two weeks to a total of 27 days. „Nevertheless, this year the Danube waterway was available on 338 days, or 92.6% of the year,“ informs viadonau.

In 2013 the continuous availability of the Austrian locks was more than 90 per cent. „Since 2008, lock revisions are carried out only in off-peak season from November to March to avoid long waits in high traffic summer months before locks,“ viadonau states.
