2018 tolls: Prolonged bonus for Euro 6 trucks in Austria

On 19 October, the new regulation on toll tariffs for road transport in Austria was assessed. This year intensive negotiations were held between the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology and the Austrian Economic Chamber, because the Ministry had planned to strongly increase the toll for Euro 6 vehicles.

“After several talks, however, we managed to achieve a good solution in the interest of the Austria’s enterprises. We would also like to thank Minister Jörg Leichtfried,” says Alexander Klacska, Chairman of the Federal Department of Transport at the Economic Chamber.

The tariff adjustment in the current draft is significantly lower than initially intended, especially for the environmentally friendliest Euro 6 vehicles. The initially planned charging of external costs for air pollution for Euro 6 vehicles as of 1 January 2018 is no longer applicable.

Instead, Euro 6 vehicles, as agreed in earlier negotiations at the end of 2015, will continue to benefit from a bonus on the toll of EUR 20 million from 2017 to 2020.

“In addition to the 2016 toll savings of EUR 65 -70 million and the Euro 6 bonus, we have thus succeeded to avoid additional costs in 2018 of approximately EUR 20 million”, explains Alexander Klacska.
