£50m Sheerness development gathers pace

Peel Ports is set to start construction work on its £50 million Sheerness logistics development as demolition of old buildings nears completion.

The Wellmarsh site is being developed to support facilities for handling, storage and distribution of commodities such as automotive, steel and forest products.

Plans for the redevelopment of the 50-acre industrial estate were approved by Swale Borough Council last year. The final piece of demolition, the levelling of a 32m high building which housed the former melt shop at the Thamesteel site will be complete by July.

Construction work will then start on a 230m long and 6.5m high bridge across Brielle Way which will connect the Wellmarsh site to the Sheerness Port estate.

Paul Barker, port director for London Medway, said: “We now look forward to turning our plans for Wellmarsh into a reality and seeing the transformation of Sheerness as a leading deep-water gateway into Europe over the next few years.”
