A.P. Moller-Maersk closes Lindo shipyard

Odense Steel Shipyard (Denmark) faces its end

On Monday the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group set the course for the closing of a traditional company. Because the Lindo shipyard near Odense is no longer able to compete with the prices of ship-builders in Asia, the company will be closed down as soon as current orders are finished and delivered. The Baltija Shipyard in Lithuania is now for sale.

The Lindo shipyard at the Island of Fünen has been existing since 1917. The company built numerous large-scale container vessels for Maersk Line, but registered losses in the past years. The current staff of 2,000 employees will be reduced step-by-step until the closing in 2012. At the end of August the first contracts with 175 employees will be terminated.
