Amazon launches fulfilment centre tours

Amazon has started offering tours of its fulfilment centre to the public in the United States.

Inviting customers to “Come see the magic that happens after you click buy on Amazon”, it is offering tours of its sites at Chattanooga, TN; Chester, VA; Jeffersonville, IN; Middletown, DE; Phoenix, AZ; San Bernardino, CA.

The centres are up to one million sq ft each, employing more than 1,000 people.

In February, Amazon said was planning to hire more than 2,500 people across its fulfilment network in the US.

“Last year, we hired more than 20,000 people into full-time jobs across our US fulfilment centres – with more than half starting as seasonal employees,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “Today, we’re excited to announce 2,500 full-time jobs, bringing new employment opportunities to local communities across the country.”
Amazon increased its sales by 23 per cent to $19.74 billion in first quarter, though operating income was down 19 per cent to $146m.

It has been expanding its product range including the introduction of Prime Pantry, a service available only to Prime members offering exclusive access to low-priced everyday essentials in everyday sizes.

It also introduced Dash, a device that allows Prime Fresh customers to shop for items — ranging from groceries to household essentials — from anywhere in their home without having to browse the AmazonFresh web site or app.
