Austrian Danube: Slight decline in transport volume

Statistics Austria attests decline in national transport on the Danube but increases in transit in 2013

A total of 10.6 million tonnes of goods was hauled as freight transport on the Austrian section of the Danube in the year 2013, a decrease of 0.1 million t (-0.8%) compared to 2012. This was announced by Statistics Austria recently. A reason for the decline is also the flood from June 2013, which had affected transport on the waterway. The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 11.1 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) and therefore by 5.6% higher than in 2012. Around 2.4 billion tkm (+9.8%) of the transport performance was provided on the Austrian section of the Danube. The number of laden journeys declined from 9,481 to 9,331 (-1.6%). The increase in transport performance with a declining transport volume can be explained by the longer travel distances per tonne (+6.4%).

In the individual transport segments of the river shipping industry, increases for transit as well as international goods receipt could be registered. Transit through Austria rose by 19 per cent or 0.5 million tonnes to 2.9 million tonnes compared to the previous year. The international goods receipt showed an increase by 0.4 per cent to 5.5 million tonnes, thus accounting for 51.4 per cent of total transport volume. For international goods dispatch, a decrease of 1.9 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes was reported. Domestic tonnage, accounting for 6.6 per cent of total transport volume – the smallest contribution, was reduced by 43.6 per cent to 0.7 million tonnes in the reference year.
