Austrian Post enters German pharmaceuticals business

New business model of Austrian Post ‘AEP direkt’ offers German pharmacies a full-line pharmaceutical distribution company for logistics

The new business model ‚AEP direkt’ („Apotheken-Einkaufs-Partner“, pharmacies sales partner) offers German pharmacies a full-line pharmaceutical distribution company, starting in the fourth quarter of 2013. Customers can choose from the fully-stocked, entire product range of the desired pharmaceutical products. Delivery from the central storage facility in Alzenau takes place the next day by the 2,500 drivers of trans-o-flex. They can permanently pass on cost advantages to all pharmacies. In addition AEP direkt offers a maximum level of simplicity and transparency with respect to defining terms and conditions and invoicing.

“Healthcare is a strongly growing market. For this reason, we have decided in collaboration with German and Austrian industry experts to launch a new service offering in this important market. This very interesting business model is new and unique, and ideally complements our business in Germany”, Georg Pölzl, Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Post, says about the latest project of the Austrian Post AG in Germany.

AEP direkt was founded by Austrian Post as the lead investor, a start-up financer in the health care sector and private investors. Jens Graefe und Markus Eckermann will manage the operations of AEP direkt. They will be supported by a team of specialists from the wholesale business, industry and pharmacies. At present, AEP GmbH employs a staff of about 50 employees and is based in Alzenau in Lower Franconia.
