Bertschi, Hoyer and Hupac take a holding in RSC Rotterdam

RSC Rail Service Center Rotterdam: New shareholder structure to boost volume development in European hinterland rail traffic

The operator of the port of Rotterdam (Havenbrijf Rotterdam) and the rail terminal RSC Rotterdam (Rail Service Center) have agreed a new lease contract for a period of 20 years. To position the terminal wider and stronger at the same time the ownership basis was divided to several partners: DB Schenker Rail keeps holding 51 per cent of the shares. The remaining 49 per cent are held by the intermodal transport providers Bertschi, Hoyer and Hupac.

Also in this new composition of shareholders the RSC will continue to operate as a neutral terminal. The four companies range among the top intermodal transport providers in Europe and are market leaders in their segment. They already have a strong presence in Rotterdam and have great experience themselves or through their partners with the use of rail terminals throughout Europe. This consortium is thus an ideal basis for growing and improved rail traffic with the port of Rotterdam. In addition the companies will launch joint projects.

Axel Marschall, CEO sales of DB Schenker Rail: „Modern transhipment centres like RSC Rotterdam form a hub between maritime and continental intermodal cargo flows. RSC now has a wide basis and will thus play an even bigger role for the growth plans at the port of Rotterdam.“

In the Waal-/Eemhaven area RSC Rotterdam as a transhipment terminal for containers, swap bodies and trailers plays a significant role in the further development of hinterland rail traffic. The terminal has a total of four modern transhipment cranes with a total annual performance of 350,000 units per year. Every day 40 trains arrive at the hub.

„The know-how and the network of new shareholders will be an impetus for the further growth of throughput activities especially in the maritime and continental rail traffic. This is necessary for our competitive position, as many emerging markets are highly oriented in the hinterland to the railway sector,‘ said Emile Hoogsteden, head of the Containers, Breakbulk and Logistics unit of the Havenbedrijf Rotterdam.
