Better road connection for thePort of Vienna

Reconstruction of Seitenhafenstraße (B14) and new bridge over Danube Canal improve accessibility of the logistics centre Port of Vienna:

With immediate effect the Portof Viennahas a better connection to the road network. After a construction period of more than one and a half years the modified road Seitenhafenstraße was opened on 23 November. The newly constructed bridge over the Danube Canal is an integrated part of the project. The bridge shall relief the traffic situation on the Südost-Tangente motorway inVienna.

The Seitenhafenbrücke bridge links the districts Leopoldstadt and Simmering. Combined with the new Seitenhafenstraße road its forms a new connection between Handelskai and Ostautobahn motorway. “Seitenhafenstraße will be named main road B14. That means we are expecting a higher traffic volume“, says Matthias Holzmüller from the magistrate for road construction Magistrat für Straßenbau (MA28).

Ing. Rudolf Mutz, Director of the Portof Vienna, expects the newbuildings to improve development of the trimodal logistics hub. Now there were more ways available to access the port, he explains. Until now transport was handled on a road that led just through the port area. “Transportations are now faster and more efficient, as we are able to offer several ways to access the port“, says Mutz.

The Management Board of the Portof Viennaexpects a strong use of the B14 by truck dirvers, who collect containers from the WienCont terminal in Freudenau. Over the new bridge “truckers” are now able to drive directly to the Ost-Autobahn motorway. Thus they save the way via the Südost-Tangente or the Freudenau port bridge.
