New study emphasises significance of rail sidings in Austria

BVL Österreich and transport department of the Austrian Economic Chamber get to the bottom of the importance of rail cargo traffic:

At a press conference peak representatives of the logistics association Bundesvereinigung Logistik Österreich (BVL) and the transport department of the Austrian Economic Chamber presented the first results of an almost finished study about “the impact of rail cargo traffic on the quality of a location, efficiency and performance of the shipping industry and a sustainable transport system inAustria”.

The paper of WIFO and Joanneum Research focuses on the development of rail cargo transport and its impacts on the business location, the energy and environmental balance and traffic volume. They carried out surveys in enterprises and interviewed experts.

The study emphasises on the significance of rail sidings for the shipping industry. “The producing industry in Austria needs functional tracks“, says DI Roman Stiftner, President BVL Österreich. Rail sidings are an important element of a sustainable transport strategy, and need therefore to be maintained, whereas planned cutbacks of supports must be reconsidered. “Direct loading of wagons at the company premises without sumptuous interim transport and reloading at the terminal increases efficiency“, Stiftner emphasises on the advantages regarding costs and energy.

Department manager Mag. Alexander Klacska calls for quick finding and implementation of a concept for area-covering rail transport in the sense of planning security of the shipping industry and the efficient use of transport means of operators of infrastructure. “The railway has to be seen as a network. If some parts of the network are absent, like when rail sidings or cargo loading terminals are shut down, the complete system is weakened, because this transport volume is also lost for the other routes in the network,“ he pointed out. This in turn increases costs per trip and makes the railway a less attractive transport mode. Thus potential consequences of the reduction of infrastructure for the rest of the network must be evaluated and considered.
