BLG Logistics registers strong growth in Gioia Tauro

BLG Logistics’ seaport terminal in Gioia Tauro in southern Italy benefits from recovery of automotive markets in North Africa

The seaport terminal run by BLG Logistics in Gioia Tauro in southern Italy shows a positive volume trend: 20,000 vehicles have been handled there on average every month since October 2012 – an increase of more than 100 per cent over the previous year. One reason for this is the recovery of the markets in Algeria and Libya after the crisis and political unrest.

Gioia Tauro is located in immediate proximity to the main shipping route through the Mediterranean Sea, thus making it favourable for imports from China, Japan, Korea, India and Thailand. With a size of 320,000 m² the seaport terminal additionally provides a central automobile hub for the Mediterranean markets and acts as a transshipment hub for the western and eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and Levant as well as the Black Sea. The advantage for shipping companies: large ships can call directly at the seaport terminal and immediately set off again. The cargo, automobiles and commercial vehicles arriving via ro-ro traffic, is distributed in the region by means of feeder vessels (short sea traffic). Distribution is also possible by truck and rail.

Besides cargo handling for motor vehicles, the terminal offers freight forwarding and agency services for manufacturers, importers and shipping companies. The services are complemented by a fully equipped technical centre for vehicle care, installing extras, modifications and repairs. The Korean company Glovis Co., Ltd, which operates as a worldwide logistics provider for Korean carmaker Hyundai, has also been taking advantage of these services since October 2012.
