Bremen ports see slight increase in container handling

A significant increase in car handling, a slight increase in the number of containers handled and a slight drop in total turnover: this is the balance sheet of the twin ports in the state of Bremen for the year 2017.

According to a report from bremenports, automotive handling developed particularly well. More than 2.3 million vehicles passed the quays of the car terminal in Bremerhaven, which is an increase of more than 11 percent on the previous year. Container throughput remained stable at 5.51 million TEU (+ 0.5%). In contrast, bulk cargo turnover fell by 5.3 percent to 9.5 million tonnes.

The handling facilities in the city of Bremen registered growth in the reporting period. In Germany’s southernmost seaport, nearly 13 million tonnes of goods were handled. This means an increase in handling of almost 7 percent. What was particularly noticeable was the increase in wood (+11%) and iron / steel (+45%) volumes.

On the contrary, the volume in tonnes in Bremerhaven fell by 3 percent. This is due to the fact that despite the increase in the number of containers handled, the weight handled fell by 2.5 million tonnes.

As in the previous year, receiving and dispatch at the ports of Bremen, at 36.4 to 36.6 million tonnes, roughly balanced each other out. A total of 7,328 commercial vessel arrivals (2016: 7,222) were registered.
