Bremerhaven strengthens its position as a new rail port

The construction of eight additional tracks along the Imsumer dike in Bremerhaven has reached the finish line. As the last project, 120 masts for the electrical overhead line will be erected on the construction site in the overseas port in the coming weeks.

Work on the large, EUR 30 million track construction project began at the end of 2014. The European Union supports the construction with a total of EUR 3.7 million from the TEN-T program (promoting the transnational transport network). At present, an average of 570 freight trains are handled each week in Bremerhaven. By expanding the rail infrastructure in the overseas port, the number of weekly trains will be increased to 770.

For CEO Robert Howe, Managing Director at bremenports the investment in the new track systems at the Imsumer dike is crucial for preparing the rail port of Bremerhaven for growing transport volumes. “The expansion of rail facilities in the Kaiserhafen area, which was completed two years ago, has led to a first increase in the capacity of the port railway and is already proving its worth today. The investment into the Imsumer dike will result in a further substantial improvement. Our port and logistics industry will benefit considerably from this.”
