Broekman Distriport expands terminal for new Scandinavian service

Rotterdam: Broekman Group and Norwegian shipping line Sea-Cargo signed an agreement to develop and utilise the so called ‚Continental Hub‘

Broekman Distriport is expanding its terminal in the Port of Rotterdam by 50,000 square meters to distribute goods to and from Western Scandinavia. Broekman Group and Norwegian Sea-Cargo signed an agreement on 17 November to develop and utilise the ‚Continental Hub‘.

Besides physically expanded, the terminal in the Botlek area will extend its activities too. These include building a roll-on, roll-off ramp to tranship non-ferrous metal, oil & gas, off-shore and forest products. These are important import and export commodities for Scandinavia.

In addition, the company is investing in improving the location’s infrastructure. Broekman will start developing the new terminal at the beginning of 2015 and the hub will be operational in  April. Initially, Sea-Cargo will use the terminal in both directions twice a week. It is expected that expanding the terminal will attract a lot of interest from other parties as well.

The new ‚Continental Hub‘ is going to play a substantial role for the Port of Rotterdam in its trade with Scandinavian countries. Incoming goods from the Asian region can now be collected in Rotterdam and transported in one batch to Norway. It works both ways: Rotterdam is a strategic place for distributing Scandinavian goods to western and southern Europe and Asia.Broekman Distriport and Sea-Cargo have decided to enter into a long-term partnership, one in which Broekman invests in adapting and renovating the terminal.

Broekman Distriport and Sea-Cargo expect the ‚Continental Hub‘ to generate profit in three areas. First, the new terminal will assure time savings. Freight can be collected and distributed centrally using the large network of water, road and rail connections at the terminal’s disposal. Moreover, the Port of Rotterdam is easily accessible since it has no locks or other obstructions. Second, the resulting efficiency drive can bring down costs. Third, the two parties will reduce the environmental impact. Both Sea-Cargo and Broekman Distriport take seriously their duties as socially responsible companies.
