Conrad Electric invest EUR 56 million into logistics expansion

600.000 items in the product range: Expanded logistics centre of Conrad Electric in Wernberg-Köblitz to handle up to 100,000 parcels daily

To be prepared for the further expansion strategy, the Conrad Electric family enterprise has enlarged its storage and shipment capacity of the logistics centre at the company headquarters located at the motorways junction in Wernberg-Köblitz (Oberpfalz). The building complex counts among Europe’s state-of-the-art distribution facilities. In addition to their key markets Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Holland and Italy Conrad supplies 150 countries worldwide from the centre.

Because of the growth in the past years, and the enormous expansion of the product range, the logistics centre at the Wernberg-Köblitz location has recently reached its capacity. Since the first logistics hall had been built in 1976, the company has been investing into new or expanded logistics every five years on average.

The current expansion adds 13,000 m² to the floor area of the building, bringing it to a total of 54,000 m² and making it a gigantic high tech distribution facility at the same time. The two-storied building with a total length of 325 metres and 175 metres in depth, is 23 metres high and provides a total logistics area of 100,000 m².

375 shuttles are operated at the new fully automated shuttle warehouse, which have access to 200,000 storage spaces by means of 60 shuttle and box lifters. In addition to the capacity expansion to a maximum of 100,000 parcels daily for business/private customers and the Conrad mega stores, it was also an aim to facilitate the work for employees.

“So far the employees had to go to the goods, thus to the respective aisles of the warehouse of their picking zones, to get individual products. Our new system brings the goods to the employees. This makes the work easier for the people in the new logistics area and also more efficient“, says Werner Conrad, CEO of the Conrad administrative board.

This year an average 40,000 parcels per day leave the house, where about 360,000 goods items are stored daily. “Our business and end customers order regularly from our comprehensive product range covering more than 600,000 items, and they expect reliable and fast delivery“, emphasies Thomas Schöfmann, managing director Conrad Austria.
