Lufthansa Cargo and Hyderabad Airport (GMR Group) establish hub for the transport of pharmaceuticals in Southeast Asia

Lufthansa Cargo steps up its commitment in Southeast Asia. Together with the GMR Group, the operator of the Airport at Hyderabad, the airline develops the airport of the Indian metropolis into the key cargo hub in South Asia for the transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Representatives of the two companies have signed a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding in Hyderabad on 3 December.

A modern infrastructure will be established at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, which was opened in 2008, in order to meet the complex requirements of reliable, temperature-controlled transport solutions. Customs procedures at the airport shall also be speeded up in order to guarantee faster transport.

Under the terms of the partnership, Lufthansa Cargo will provide the capacity for the transport of temperature-sensitive cargo. To this end, the company will station its own fleet of cooling containers in Hyderabad. “Today India is the world’s largest market for generics,” said Martin Schlingensiepen, Vice President Product Management at Lufthansa Cargo, at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. “The demand for temperature-controlled transport will continue to grow substantially in the coming years. A strong partnership with GMR Hyderabad International Airport will enable us to offer our local customers, a tailor-made product for the fast and reliable transport of pharmaceuticals.”

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) is a joint venture formed by GMR Group (63 %) India’s government (13 %), the government of the Indian state Andhra Pradesh (13 %) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (11 %). The object of the venture is planning, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the new state-of-the-art Greenfield airport in Shamshabad, Hyderabad. The airport of Hyderabad was opened in March 2008 with a capacity for 12 million passengers und 100,000 tons of air freight per year at that time.
