CargoBeamer starts operating on railway between Rostock and Vienna

Paving the rail-way for all trailers: CargoBeamer launches new system approach for non craneable trailers in intermodal road/rail transport

At the trade fair ‚transport logistic 2013’ CargoBeamer announced the official start of their commercial service in the intermodal road/rail transport. “With the launch of the first two services, e-mobility for non craneable trailers, that is economically efficient, becomes reality“, the company states in a press conference.

From June 2013 CargoBeamer in cooperation with Volkswagen AG operates transportations on the route between Wolfsburg and Barcelona and will establish a throughput facility at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. The second service will link the ports of Rostock and Vienna to the economic regions Scandinavia and Central and Southeast Europe by the use of one wagon group. ERS Railways B.V. and CargoBeamer agreed on a long-term cooperation for this service.

More routes are in the pipeline: In cooperation with BLS Cargo AG, shuttle trains from the Baltic Sea via the Gotthard route in Alpine transit shall be operated from 2014. The launch of the east-west axis serving the relations Calais – Berlin – Poland and the Baltic States is scheduled for 2015. In Lithuania, a corresponding automated lane change terminal is being implemented. More terminals in Calais (France), Hagen and Legnica (Poland) are in the pipeline.

CargoBeamer transports semitrailers in wagon attachments. These can be loaded without the presence of the train. Throughput to rail is then possible conventionally by crane, or in parallel and without crane technique in automated handling systems. Trucks and trains do not have to wait for each other. In the automated terminals, the entire process including the usual throughput process including ususal checks takes less than an hour, the actual loading takes 15 minutes.

Gross weight for trailers transported with the CargoBeamer is 37 tonnes, compared with 33 tonnes for road transport (weight including tractor: 40 tonnes). CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 60 per cent. One CargoBeamer train reduces CO2 emissions by 3,500 tonnes per year.

CargoBeamer based in Leipzig is a logistics company providing a new system for intermodal freight transport. The company has developed own rail cars and an automated handling system, a new parallel rail transportation solution for all trailers, mega trailers, refrigerated, tank and silo trailers without special technical equipment for crane terminals. Wagons are also compatible with container crane terminals.
