Changed truck and bus toll tariff in Austria from 1 January 2019

As of 1 January 2019, there will be an inflation-related adjustment of 2.2 per cent for the basic tariff per infrastructure kilometer for truck and bus toll tariffs. The tariffs are adjusted on the basis of the harmonised consumer price index of the year 2017.

Euro 6 vehicles will still be able to get a bonus. However, as more and more of these low-emission vehicles are on the road, this bonus amounts to 1.7 per cent. The toll system will thus continue to favour the most environmentally friendly trucks on our roads, the Austrian road infrastructure company Asfinag announces in a press release.

The external costs of air pollution are being gradually phased in for Euro 6 trucks. This means that for 2019 these vehicles will be charged 40 per cent of the external costs. From 2020 they will have to pay the full amount.

The total tariff is made up as follows: basic tariff per infrastructure kilometer depending on tariff group (differentiated by axle category), plus external costs for traffic-related air pollution (according to Euro emission class and axle category) and noise emission (according to axle category).

According to Asfinag the income from the infrastructure toll will be invested into construction, operation and traffic safety on Austrian motorways and expressways. The external costs are allocated to the  Ministry of Transport.
