Chapman Freeborn flies search & rescue teams to Japan

Chapman Freeborn Airchartering has been involved in the effort to fly search and rescue teams to Japan following last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

In the hours following the disaster, Chapman Freeborn flew a German search & rescue team together with dogs and thirteen tons of technical equipment from Frankfurt-Hahn to Tokyo Narita airport on a chartered B767 aircraft.

The 49-strong team was among the first to reach Japan, and joined the international effort to search for survivors that may be trapped in the debris.

Chapman Freeborn has also responded to requests to transport aid related cargo to Japan, and has been working on charter flights for corporate groups needing to fly their personnel home.

FedEx will work with our long-standing humanitarian organization relationships: American Red Cross, Heart to Heart International, Water Missions and Direct Relief International to assist in bringing critical medical and other emergency supplies required for the recovery efforts currently underway.

Flight support subsidiary Wings 24 advises that airports including Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda and Nagoya airports are currently operational, with humanitarian related flights being given priority by authorities.

Sendai Airport, which was badly damaged by the ten metre tsunami, will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, OOCL reports that operations at all ports except Sendai, Hitachinaka and Kashima are returning to normal.  All cargo bound for the affected areas will be discharged at the Port of Tokyo or Yokohama until the situation at the other ports becomes more stable.
