Chilltainers and Hellmann launch JV

Chilltainers Hellmann – a newly established 50:50 joint venture between Chilltainers Holdings and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, is expected to deliver an unprecedented level of global logistics capability and efficiency to the New Zealand perishables industry.

The new JV combines Helmann’s expansive logistics network (443 branches in 157 countries) with Chilltainers‘ unique thermal packaging system, which will directly challenge the use of packaging grade expandable polystyrene (EPS)..

According to Chilltainers founder Wayne Harrison, Hellmann is the only freight-forwarder with its own global network committed exclusively to the perishables sector – the Hellmann Perishable Logistics division.

Chilltainers‘ patented system uses double-sided metallised laminate bonded to corrugated board to form a leak-proof carton, delivering major environmental and economic benefits for perishables compared with the EPS alternative.

"We are good at what we do, which is integrating packaging into production for perishable products, and Hellmann is very good at transporting these consignments in pristine condition," said Harrison. "Combining Chilltainers with Hellmann delivers the logistics coldchain expertise to get perishables from A to B in the most cost-effective, efficient and environmentally-friendly manner."

Hellmann New Zealand managing director Chris McCagney pointed out that, unlike the EPS alternative, Chilltainers‘ packaging system is not oil-based, and is therefore minimally influenced by oil price increases.

Furthermore, its design enables higher-density freight and therefore reduced airfreight and road freight costs when compared with EPS. It is also environmentally-friendly, and presents opportunities to earn payment from recyclers instead of incurring costs to dispose of waste.

A local award-winning invention, which has been progressively refined over the past two decades, the Chilltainers packaging system is currently being manufacturing in North America, with expansion soon expected in Australia, Chile, Norway and South Africa.

In New Zealand, Chilltainers are manufactured under licence in Christchurch and Auckland by Carter Holt Harvey.
