China announces plan for the future of cold-chain logistics
The State Council of China has approved a five-year development plan for cold-chain logistics. Key focuses of the plan include making cold-chains in China both greener and smarter.
It acknowledges the need for cold-chain logistics companies to ‘shore up weak links in infrastructure, ease delivery routes, improve cold-chain technologies and equipment, and enhance oversight mechanisms’. China plans to invest in infrastructure including smart sorting equipment, logistics robots, and temperature monitors, as well as 5G and smart technologies like AI.
As part of the plan, China has set a goal of having an effective cold-chain network in place by 2025 that serves the country’s urban and rural areas. Additionally, it wants the network to be connected to the international market in this timeframe.
The State Council believes that improving cold-chain logistics should increase food supply and ensure safe transportation of food and pharmaceutical cargo, which it claims would raise the standard of living for China’s residents.
