Christmas will have four delivery peaks

There are going to be four delivery peaks in the run-up to Christmas, with the biggest falling on 1st December. according to MetaPack.

Technology provider MetaPack has analysed historical and current delivery data to predict when the busiest delivery times will be.

It reckons the four peaks will fall on Mondays with the 1st December being the highest, followed by the 15th. It says that with Christmas falling on a Thursday there will be time to order goods on the Monday and Tuesday immediately before.

The current forecast on Christmas 2014 is it will be the busiest so far, with online order and delivery volumes expected to reach 120 million orders in December alone. However, MetaPack points out that, like the past four years, 2014’s peak shopping season is starting later and, as a result, will peak later.

“There are going to be steep peaks of online delivery demand that the industry will need to scale week after week in the run up to Christmas,” said Angela O’Connell, marketing and strategy director at MetaPack.

“However, the industry has been innovating all year on delivery in readiness for Christmas 2014. There’s tremendous collaboration among retailers and carriers to widen the choice available to consumers and meet their demands for greater flexibility. In fact, this Christmas consumers will be increasingly embracing innovative options like Sunday service and click and collect, which will play an integral role this Christmas.”
