Dachser expands food logistics facilities for EUR 50 million

Dachser Food Logistics upgrades three German sites with more area for transhipment and storage of food

The start of the European Food Network of the Dachser group is accompanies by investments into area expansions. The logistics provider has started operating new transhipment and storage facilities for food at three locations in Germany in the past weeks.

Since October 2012 they have established a 5,200 m² transhipment hall and a 7,500 m² high-rack warehouse with 15,000 pallet slots in Langenau near Ulm. “In mid-August the first pallets were stored, the new transhipment facility has started operation“, says Robert Mittermeier, branch manager for production at the logistics centre in Ulm. The Swabian Dachser organisation has evolved into one of the biggest food houses in the past years: In total the site in Langenau offers 54,000 pallet slots for food in different temperature ranges.

Also in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart they added 6,000 m² logistics area in a temperature range from 2 to 7 degree Celsius. “Coldmeat and ham from the Black Forest and other Swabian specialities are shipped from Kornwestheim to all over Europe“, says branch manager Bernd Schäfer. “The previous food transhipment hall is changed into a warehouse. This way we can offer customers in Kornwestheim storage capacity for food in different temperature ranges.”

In June a 7,200 m² transhipment hall for food was added to the Dachser logistics centre Berlin in Schönefeld. 76 trucks can be simultaneously loaded and unloaded there. „We focus on sustainable growth. In the Berlin logistics centre the company also assumes procurement and distribution of Dallmayr’s coffee segment. This includes various additional services such as display and mixed cases as well as quality control.”

“Dachser Food Logistics has been steadily growing in the past years. In 2012 we generated more than 13 per cent growth in turnover“, reports managing director Alfred Miller. “We expect further growth impetus from the launch of the European Food Network and the vivengo product world on October 1. Therefore we had to establish sufficient capacity in due time – such as the investments of EUR 50 million in Langenau, Kornwestheim and Schönefeld.”
