DB Schenker launches smartbox in Hong Kong and South China

With the debut of the DB Schenkersmartbox in Hong Kong and South China, ocean freight containers from these regions can now be continuously monitored in real-time.

The smartbox technology enables the transmission of a shipment’s current GPS coordinates and any deviations from the predetermined route. It also provides information on additional security parameters such as temperature, vibrations, activity at the container door and light inside the container.

According to Henry Schmidl, Schenker International’s director of Ocean Freight, Hong Kong & South China, the DB Schenkersmartbox is the only one of its kind in the market, and has proven effective in practice and has been in use on the rest of the world’s main trade lanes since 2006.

"Increased transparency creates the potential to optimise planning of complex transport chains and reduce transit time, which is of key importance for especially valuable shipments," said Schmidl, adding that the solution can also potentially help to directly reduce costs, such as insurance premiums.
